Dear Parents,
As we wind down to the year’s completion we would like to express our thanks and gratitude to all parents. We have had a wonderful year of learning and achievement in all areas of the children’s school lives, i.e. the academic areas, public speaking, the sporting arena, the performing arts, citizenship and leadership.
2010 Directions
As you can imagine, school enrolment numbers are very difficult to predict as houses continue ‘to sprout’ on the vacant blocks. At this stage we are likely to begin the year with approximately 400 children (an estimated increase of 25-30 on 2009 numbers). On these predictions the school’s structure for 2010 will be as follows:
Kindergarten – S. Rudling, R. Farnham, D. Littlewood
Kinder/Year 1 – A. Gibbons
Years 1/2- A. Whittard, G. Harter
Years 2/3 – L. Weekes
Years 3/4 – M. Harding, J. Guyatt
Years 4/5/6 – L. Dunn
Year 5 – M. Roberts
Years 5/6 – C. Maclou
Year 6 – A. Smith
Preschool – B. Connor, D. Neich, R. Booley
Senior IM – K. Gehrke
Junior IM – E. Sinnott
Senior Language – K. Galloway
Junior Language – D. Burke
IO – A. Sinclair
Librarian – F. Woods
School Counsellor – T. Brown
ESL – G. Bland
STLA – K. Nonenmacher, G. Ryan
RFF – R. Quarmby
Office – J. Mulholland, M. Boothe, S. Byrne
SLSO – D. Theobald, K. Mitchell, P. Dyball
Preschool Aides – D. Toole, J. Stewart, W. Wilkinson
CLO - N. Ede
GA – D. McGowan
Hats for 2010
In 2010 there will be a change in uniform policy. From Term One we will be strongly encouraging the wearing of the full school cricket style hat.
Term One will be a ‘transition time’ leading to Term Two when the wearing will become mandatory for all children playing in the full sunshine, i.e. those with no hats or wearing only a cap will remain seated in the shade.
The reason for this move is simple. We know that constant sun exposure on the ears and neck may cause skin cancer. The welfare of our children is of paramount importance to us, in both the long and short term durations of their lives.
I hope parents will not only understand but support our new policy. The cost of the hats is $10.00. They are available at school.
Should any parent find the cost of the hats too great please have no hesitation in seeking assistance.
School Holidays
Wednesday, 16th December will be the last day of school for the children. Teachers will continue on Thursday, 17th and Friday, 18th December. We will remain on vacation until Wednesday, 27th January (teachers).
The children will return on Thursday, 28th January. (Please note Kindergarten and Preschool children have received their designated times.)
We wish you the very best for Christmas, the holidays and time together. May all children return happily and safely after the holidays.
With my very best regards.

South West Sydney Pacific Islander Awards Presentation
Last Wednesday evening it was a pleasure and honour to be asked to present one of the prestigious Pacific Islander awards. The function, attended by hundreds of community members and dignitaries, was a warm, colourful and entertaining event. Many of our children and ex-students were present and performed – a point of great pride for us all.
Two of the major awards were won by our parents, Ms. Lynn Muaulu and Mr. Peter Elers. Their dedication and commitment to youth and the needy are clearly outstanding. I felt pleased and proud to know such talented and compassionate people.
We are enriched as a school when such people so generously share themselves with us.
Weekend Planning
Last weekend parents, teachers and other staff members worked hard to draft directions and plans for 2010. We are currently firming funding and will then prioritise if necessary. I sincerely thank all the staff for their participation especially in working to finalise evaluations and proposals. At this time of the year I realise that the commitment is even greater than usual.
‘Good Kids’ Excursion
What a pleasure it has been this year to accompany nearly 200 of the children to various locations.
Like all others, last Thursday was a great day! We watched Campbelltown Performing Arts final musical endeavour for the year and enjoyed talking to the actors/musicians afterwards. It was wonderful seeing so many of our ex-students, who now attend the school Thank you for coming with us Mrs. Suttie.
Mauricio Guerra
Mauricio was a student at our school twelve years ago and attended our special language class.
Clarice Maclou and I look forward to enjoying Mauricio’s final piano recital on Tuesday evening. Mauricio will then receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Music. We are very proud of his outstanding achievement.
Child Protection Services
From January 2010 there will be major changes to the way in which children are protected from forms of neglect and abuse.
‘Well Being’ units are being established by the various government directorates – health, social services, police and education। Principals have recently been briefed on the new procedures including the changes to legislation.
From January, reports of ‘significant harm’ only will be reported to DoCS and all others will go to the ‘Well Being’ unit of the DET. They will then assist families to access services and supports.
We hope there will be a great improvement.
Parliamentary Inquiry
You may recall that in June this year our teachers supported a presentation in Parliament House that called on the government to provide additional supports and resources for children with special needs.
Some of our efforts have been rewarded with the establishment of a Parliamentary Inquiry by the General Purpose Standing Committee No. 2 of the NSW Legislative Council. Once again our school will provide input.
We anticipate that the recommendations of such an inquiry will result in benefits for special needs children across NSW.
Congratulations to all the parents and teachers who supported our endeavours। What an outstanding result!
Canteen
Please note that the canteen will be closed after Monday, 14th December। Any outstanding accounts need to be settled before this date. Thank you.
Active After School Communities
Please note that the last day of activities for 2009 is this Thursday, 3rd December.
Kind regards.

SongRoom Assembly
Last Wednesday, Sarah Redfern held a special, whole school assembly to celebrate the support of the SongRoom. The students involved in the drumming program held throughout Terms 3 & 4 were given the opportunity to showcase their wonderful talent. The hall was filled with heat and beat!
In addition, the SongRoom invited a local group to perform and ‘Echoes of Polynesia’ entertained us with their incredible talent.
Ms. Loucataris, the SongRoom instructor, led the students and Ms. Spillane, the community director of SongRoom, presented to Mrs. McBride newly purchased drums to add to our collection.
On behalf of Sarah Redfern, I would like to salute the SongRoom for making all of this possible, for without you this amazing assembly would not have taken place.

School Hats
School uniform prices will increase slightly next year due to supplier increases.
For sun protection, in 2010 the children will be required to wear the black, slouch school hat. No caps or multi coloured hats will be allowed to be worn. Our school policy is – No hat, no play. The children will be required to sit quietly under the shelter during breaks if they do not have the required school hat.
Parents please ensure that your children wear the black school slouch hat, which is available from the school office for $10.00 or can also be purchased from Skool Uniforms in Ingleburn.

Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
We have a very busy fortnight coming up! We have many planned activities for the children, continued professional learning for the teachers and preparation for Management Planning at the end of Week 5 (21st/22nd November).
Parents may/may not be aware that the NSW Dept. of Education and Training announced an additional two school development days at the end of the year, i.e. 17th & 18th December. During this time teachers are expected to plan for 2010 and/or continue their professional development.
In exchange for the very last day our teachers will be working on the weekend as previously mentioned. We are keen to complete as much of the planning for 2010 prior to the end of term so that there is time to complete details and organise classes/programs. A skeletal staff only will be available for enrolments etc. on the last day of term.
Record Breaking OC Results!
Five of our outstanding Year 4 students have managed to achieve at the highest level in the state. The following children have either won direct entry or are high on the reserve lists for Opportunity Class placements in 2010:
• Sadin Afsar
• MD Anik
• Yassinn Haque
• Iramul Hoque
• Beau Wakely
We congratulate the boys on their talent and hard work, their wonderfully supportive families and their quality teachers. We will be sad to lose them!
Public Speaking Competition
We wish our representatives, Rima Butler and Iramul Hoque, the best of luck when they perform in the Regional Competition at Wattle Grove P.S. on Tuesday, 3rd November. They will be accompanied by Erin Sinnott.
Stage 2 Camp
Years 3 & 4 will enjoy a wonderful learning experience at Lane Cove National Park on Wednesday/Thursday this week as they complete their study of National Parks and their environments. They will be accompanied by Chad Harris, Julietta Guyatt, Garry Bland, Anne Whittard and Katie Galloway. Some experts from Discovery Leaders will provide additional learning for the children. We wish them a happy and productive time.
‘Smart Data’
On Wednesday afternoon the school executive will meet with School Development Officer, John Warren, to examine key areas of the NAPLAN results. We will identify all the statistically important areas of strength and those requiring development. This will aid programming for the future.
Director General Visit
NSW Dept. of Education and Training, Director General, Michael Coutts-Trotter, will visit our school on Thursday, 5th November. He will speak with teachers and principals and visit some classrooms. We will be specifically discussing the resourcing of special needs children.
Music Workshop
Jenny Suttie and Nicole Ede will accompany 15 talented young choristers to a music workshop on Tuesday, 10th November. The excursion is provided free of charge by the Song Room program. The children will travel by bus to Pier 4 at Millers Point. This is a unique and wonderful opportunity for the children.
Kindy Orientation
We enjoyed our first orientation last Tuesday. The children were very happy and settled – thank you, parents! We look forward to welcoming them again on Tuesday, 3rd November at 2.00pm.
Aboriginal Awards
Jordan Bentley Roberts is the deserving recipient of one of the esteemed Regional Aboriginal awards. Jordan is not only a great swimmer and good school school citizen, he also achieved a perfect score in the spelling section of the NAPLAN tests. We look forward to joining Jordan and his family on Wednesday night, 11th November at the Liverpool Catholic Club where he will receive his award.
Community of Schools Program
On Thursday, 12th November teachers from schools in the country and the Minto Community of Schools will gather to discuss the Financial Literacy program piloted during 2009. I look forward to joining Sarah Rudling and the team as they complete their summative evaluation.
The pilot has been so impressive it has been nominated for one of the 2009 Australian College of Educators’ Awards. Fingers crossed!
Preschool Play Days
In order to facilitate the transition process our young preschoolers for 2010 will enjoy some play days with their parents on Thursday and Friday, 12th & 13th November. We welcome the new youngsters and their families to our school.
Priority Action Schools (PAS) Visit
Our last interaction with the PAS program will be completed at the end of this year. We are greatly appreciative of the funding (approx. $1m over five years) that has enabled us to hire additional personnel to meet the needs of our children. One of our last commitments is to present some of our evaluations to School Education Director, Ray Palmer, on Friday, 13th November. We will focus on the Kindergarten Language Program, the Aboriginal programs and the teachers’ mentoring.
Minto’s Got Talent
Last Friday we hosted the Minto talent competition and were very proud of our school dancing entries from:
• Ashika Jagdish & Kate Blackall
• Tegan Collins
• Malae & Tia Tuimavave, Helen Vaotuua & Alafou Fatu
We congratulate and thank Teagan, who won third prize - $200 worth of sports equipment for our school and a Toys’R’Us voucher for herself.
Forgive an Old Principal
At the end of last term I was ‘singing the praises’ of some outstanding achievements by our students in the NAPLAN tests. I confused our most excellent achiever with her namesake.
In fact, Ashika Jagdish not Ashika Raj (previous student who left in 2007) scored top bands in all areas of Literacy and Numeracy. (What a talent!) We congratulate Ashika and her supportive family.
Have a great fortnight.

Principal's Message
Welcome to Term 4. Unbelievably the end of year is looming with only eight and a half weeks left to achieve a great deal.
The children and teachers will be working hard to complete units of work, assessments and compiling data to provide parents with a genuine exchange of information regarding children’s learning.
Orientations
For all children whose parents have completed enrolment forms, Kindergarten orientation will begin next Tuesday, 27th October and will continue for four weeks.
Similarly, Preschool orientation and play days will commence on 12/13th November.
Please make sure that friends/new neighbours are aware. We have delivered school prospectuses and letters into the new area but word of mouth may well be more effective.
Solar Program
This week I will meet with company representatives to examine various combinations of solar power and low energy lighting. We will be utilising a $50,000 grant offered by the Federal government.
Preschool Playground
As parents may have noticed, the preschool playground excavation has now begun. While the play area is out of action (3-4 weeks) the children will utilise the enclosed area at the back of Kindergarten. We look forward to the finished product.
League Tables
I will represent public schools as a participant at a Forum organised by the Daily Telegraph and the University of Technology, Sydney on Friday, 23rd October.
Input will be provided by the NSW Education Minister, Verity Firth, and academics from tertiary, secondary and primary institutions. I look forward to putting forward the case for schools such as our own.
Have a wonderful fortnight.

Blue Mountains Excursion
This Stage One excursion was cancelled last term due to the dust storms.
Arrangements have now been made for the children to travel to the Blue Mountains National Park on Wednesday, 28th October.
Your child will bring home an updated permission note soon.

Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy) results were given to parents last week. Some outstanding achievements were made by some individuals in both Years 3 and 5. Others from our support classes tried their very best and achieved at their expected level. We recognise that the tests are not really constructed for those with learning or other disabilities.
We are delighted that the children’s results demonstrated that the curriculum we provide extends the most gifted students and supports those with special needs. We congratulate the children on their effort.
Please remember that this test is only a 40 minute snapshot of your child’s achievement. We have collated at school rich data that transverses all aspects of their school life.
A special congratulations to Ashika Raj, who scored in the top band across all areas! What a star!
School Learning Support Program
Many parents may have read or heard in the media that the NSW government (through the Dept. of Education & Training) were proposing a new model of support for children with special needs and disabilities. The model required the closure of many programs including the Early School Support Program, the Support Teacher Learning Assistance, the Language classes, the Special Reading classes, the Outreach programs for autism and behaviour and the district assistant principals supporting those programs.
These teachers would then receive 110 hours of online learning and become responsible for children with disabilities in all schools (i.e. dyslexia, language, behaviour, autism, reading and all others).
Special needs students attracting less than $6,000 per annum to support them with teachers’ aides were to lose their funding.
The model was to be cost neutral i.e. operate with no additional government funds.
The NSW Teachers’ Federation, believing that the newly proposed model would not benefit either children or teachers, protested in the Industrial Relations Commission. Justice Karanagh has asked for a pilot to take place in 2010 before any final decisions are made.
As matters progress I will keep you posted.
Teaching Practices
As you are aware, teachers at Sarah Redfern PS are dedicated to keeping current and developing their teaching skills. Over the next week and at the beginning of Term 4 teachers will be utilising some additional time to visit with experts and master teachers.
Audit
An auditor’s visit to examine our financial, administrative and OH&S practices resulted in a blemish free report. Congratulations to Janelle Mulholland, our wonderful School Administration Manager.
Enrolments
Please return any outstanding ones for 2010 especially Kindy & Preschool. Orientations will begin early next term and we wish to ensure that all the youngsters benefit from this excellent program. Places in Preschool are filling fast!
Please remind neighbours and friends!
Reminders:
• Karen Endicott, new principal at Sarah Redfern High School, will visit on Wednesday afternoon at 2.00pm to speak with all prospective parents K-6. You are all welcome!
• ICT Expo’s official opening on Tuesday, 29th September at 5.00pm. Please come along and celebrate your children’s achievements.
Evacuation:
As is necessary each semester, we will hold an evacuation practice on Friday. Plese do not be alarmed if you see the children outside the school.
Holidays:
School will finish on Friday, 2nd October and will resume for all students on Monday, 19th October. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday.
Kind regards

Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
What a great year of achievement our children are having! It seams that no matter what area we enter our young ones are measuring up to the very best.
Macarthur Eisteddfod
It was a privilege to watch our choirs perform at ‘The Cube’ (Campbelltown Catholic Club) last Thursday. Not only did they demonstrate great talent, their behaviour and social skills were outstanding. A parent from another participating school (Mittagong P.S.) rang to both congratulate and praise the children.
The results were also very pleasing – a first in the junior section and second in the senior – the best school entered.
Enterprise Fair
Last fortnight I mentioned the upcoming Fair – an exercise in living mathematics. Wow! What a day of energy, creativity, calculation and reward! Children from all the Minto schools and their teachers gathered under the organisation of Sarah Rudling to demonstrate their newly acquired knowledge and skills.
They confidently articulated under-standings in budgeting, advertising, predicting, banking, insuring and presenting. It was a great experience!
Author Visit
The visit from Roslyn Motter, children’s author, last Monday was a great experience for the Stage 2 students. I joined them at lunchtime to discuss characters, purposes etc. and was delighted to hear some really insightful observations and questions from the children. I am sure that they will always remember Roslyn’s exuberant style and dynamic presentation.
Outstanding Spelling Results
Recent outcomes in the University of NSW Spelling Competition are as follows:
Distinctions:
Ashika Jagdish, Sadin Afsar, Mohammed Anik, Yassinn Haque
Credits:
Iramul Hoque, Denise Benasa, Sifat Haque, Rafid Iqbal
Again we are absolutely thrilled with this level of excellence.
Healthy Lifestyles
Many thanks to those parents who so quickly responded to my communication regarding participation in a pilot program to assist in the implementation of healthy living for families.
Chad Harris and I will be meeting with the organisers from Oxygen, Channel 7 and the Good Food Guide magazine to finalise the program which will begin in the first week of Term 4. As soon as we know the details we will be in touch.
Sydney South West Regional Representatives
Nicholas Wikaira, Kara Oeurn, Tuaahu Kumeroa recently respresented the Region in Rugby Union. All boys performed outstandingly to reach this level. We are very proud of their achievement. These boys will be real contenders for the future.
Priority Schools Conference
Will be held on Thursday and Friday (10th & 11th Sept.) at Darling Harbour. Teachers, Sarah Rudling, Erin Synnott, Fiona Woods and Julietta Guyatt will accompany parents, Aroha Paul and Lyn Muaulu, and students Andre Huang and Ashika Jagdish. We look forward to their feedback.
Kind regards,

Rugby Union
After being victorious in the Macarthur area last term, our Rugby Union team contested the Sydney finals recently at Granville Park, Merrylands. All boys represented our school extremely well, exhibiting fine sportsmanship and playing with skill and commitment.
Winning three of our five lead up games unfortunately was not enough to enable us to qualify for the semi-finals but we were entertained by some enterprising football throughout the day.
Thank you to Mr. Finneran who was responsible for coaching and developing the boys’ skills and also many thanks to the parents who assisted with transport and were there to encourage and support the team.
The team members were: Tuaahu, Indra, Nicholas, Anthony, Pua, Jamin, Raymond, Raka, Kara, Sione, John Robert, John Le Noel, Jonathan & Nathan.
Congratulations, boys, on such a find achievement in our first year of rugby union at our school.

Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
I know this is not newsletter week but I wanted to share some exciting news with you.
Students Offered Selective Schools Places
Hanna Selesele and April Le have been offered places at Macquarie Fields High School in the selective stream for intellectually gifted students. We are really proud of these girls, not only because of their natural gifts and excellent work ethics but also their maturity and great citizenship. They are beautiful young people in every sense of the word. They have been with us since preschool and we recognise the contribution that each teacher (P-6) has made to the girls’ lives. Most of all we congratulate the families who have loved, nurtured and supported their children. Well done!
Rugby Union Representatives
Nicholas Wikaira, Tuaahu Kumeroa and Kara Oeurn have made amazing achievements in Rugby Union. All three boys have been selected to represent Sydney South West Region in the state carnival. This is most unusual when the number of potential candidates are considered. Again we congratulate the boys, and their supportive families who spend so much time and effort making sure their sons attend training and the games. Well done!
Good Kids Excursion
I am delighted to be accompanying 49 students to the movies on Friday. Once again the teachers have identified the children who have demonstrated care, consideration and/or improvement in their behaviour. We will visit Dumaresq St. Theatre to watch Ice Age 3.
The children are:
Lunetta Selesele, April Nuumativa, Cassandra Leslie, Rossana Tupa, Ritik Segran, Cody Lasogga, Jayden Jakob, Joshua Terii, Jennifer Nuseir, Sutheeya Chae, Bailey Ibbett, Ethan Oddy, Sarah Thammavong, Ashneel Kumar, Kittie Fatu, Hebah Azia, Melinda Veth, Kaitlyn Torres, Joshua Visesio, Thomas Tyson, Sadin Afsar, Saarah Shakeel, Leyna Hoang, Iramul Haque, Travis McDonald, Leah Adams, Larni McGuiness, Michaela Eadie, Kirstie Watts, Jaydn Roland-Black, Alex Blazevski, Cheyenna Harris, Loren Paewai, Jessilyn Veth, Kate Blackhall, Teancum Timu, Lenah Yalayala, Andre Huang, Watisoni Yalayala, Jerusalem Tupai, Jamie-Lee Andy, Somrhetai Jaidee, Kelly Harkness, Tauatia Tuimavave, Kiripati Taua, Lavinia Taiseni, Paul Leighton, Ben Tyson, Hope Finneran.
Again, congratulations to all families. Well done!
Canteen Closure
The canteen will be closed on Friday, 10th July in preparation for the school holidays. Please ensure that the children have adequate food and drink supply from home.
You might like to know that our canteen was surprised by a ‘spot’ audit from the Campbelltown City Council. As expected the report was outstanding and we met every requirement with flying colours. Congratulations to Busy and the canteen ladies! What an outstanding team!
Have a great holiday with the children. Teachers return on Monday, 27th July and children on the following day.

Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
A famous saying: ‘Time flies when you’re having fun!’ - so Sarah Redfern P.S. must be having barrels of fun because we now find ourselves in the second last week of this semester. Imagine - we are already half way towards 2010. Where did those months go?
Reports
Parents, next week you will be receiving reports on the performance of your children. Please take time to sit with your child and discuss what progress has been made and/or what difficulties are being experienced. If you would like clarification on anything in the report please see the teacher immediately. This could make a tremendous difference to your child’s education, not only for the remainder of the year, but for their future educational performance. Teachers would also like to thank parents for their co-operation this past semester because your child’s education involves three stakeholders – students, parents and teachers.
Breakfast
Daystar Foundation apologises for the absence of breakfast on Monday last week. Due to unforseen circumstances breakfast was not available that morning. However, the canteen ladies came to the rescue on Tuesday. The remainder of the week was catered for and our thanks go to Matthew Roberts and Gisela Harter for coming to the rescue and ensuring that the students were able to face the day with contented stomachs.

While we are on the subject of food – I think we all need to applaud ‘Busy’ (an appropriate name) and the canteen staff for their performance. Not only are they providing our school with healthy food, but they have been acknowledged by the Campbelltown Council’s Canteen Inspector for having met all the requirements for a healthy and clean canteen. Thank you ladies.
During the coming months our canteen is going to undergo a ‘makeover’. No the ladies are not having facelifts or new hairstyles, the canteen is going to be refurbished. So, not only will we be able to boast about our gourmet food, we will also have a five star canteen. Wait for further updates.
Wondering what you can do during the holidays? Well, put your heads together and come up with a delicious, healthy new sandwich. Early in Term 3 the canteen will be running a competition called, ‘So you think you can make a sandwich!’. Stay tuned.
Principal Returns
On Thursday we will welcome back our fearless leader, Cheryl McBride, from her holiday. We all hope she had a wonderful break and is back with renewed vigour to take on the next part of 2009.
Have a good fortnight.
Clarice Maclou
Deputy Principal.

Dear Parents,
Firstly, a warm welcome to Amanda Sinclair into the permanent ranks of the teaching profession. Last Tuesday this talented young lady was successful at merit selection. So now she is a permanent part of Sarah Redfern Public School and a treasured asset. Congratulations, Amanda!
As many of you know, Cheryl McBride, Chairperson of the Public School Principals Forum, has been working tirelessly with teachers in trying to ascertain improved funding for students with disabilities. Last Wednesday, teachers, parents and principals from many areas around Sydney converged on Parliament House to present their case. The outcome was extremely successful and a parliamentary inquiry will now be held into the funding of children with disabilities. Again, thank you to all concerned for a job extremely well done and hopefully the extra funding will assist these students in accessing the curriculum to the best of their ability.
On a more serious note, it was extremely disappointing that none of the parents who were supposed to have attended the ‘Money Minder Training’ days last Tuesday and Wednesday turned up. This was an excellent opportunity for community members to become more informed about making the best decisions on how their money could work for them. I trust that there were more pressing matters that had to be attended to. In future would community members please inform us if they are unable to attend in order for other arrangements to be made.
Next week is the beginning of the School Swimming Scheme. Children will be accompanied by Garry Bland, assisted by Melissa Harding and Katie Galloway. This will continue for ten days concluding on Monday, 6th July, 2009. Please ensure that your child attends every day in order to benefit fully from this program.
Last, but not least, at the end of this term parents will be receiving school reports on their children’s progress. We trust you will be suitably impressed with the amount of hard work covered by teachers and students.
Kind regards,
Clarice Maclou

Important Information for Parents & Students
The Department recognises that some families will be subject to family breakdown. In the absence of any notification to the contrary, it will be assumed that both parents retain a shared and equal parental responsibility for their children and have been involved in making any decisions regarding their children’s education. This means that the school will recognise that each parent has equal duties, obligations, responsibilities and opportunities in relation to matters involving the school.
If any changes occur in your family relationships which have the potential to impact on the relationship between the school and your family, you are required to advise the school immediately. This includes providing copies of any court orders that may be obtained.

Ode to the Sarah Redfern Volunteers
A school is more than books and desks
And learning two plus two
It’s people who share their skills and care
To help students like me and you
At Sarah Redfern we are in luck
We have some special friends
Who deserve our recognition
And gratitude until the end
Today we’d like to honour you
In our own Sarah Redfern way
You volunteers who help us learn
Each and every day
Please listen to our words now friends
You volunteers so bright
They’re spoken with such gratitude
For making school just right
Daystar provides our breakfast
Which gets our brains in gear
Cereal, toast and “Good morning’s”
Start each of our days with good cheer
The canteen helpers are patient
They serve us recess and lunch
Their service at the counter
Ensures we have food to munch
Those brilliant folk at Clayton Utz
Whose letters we love to read
We’re flabbergasted with what you write
It’s such a selfless deed
Some classes have parent helpers
Who give up their precious time
To make sure that our learning
Is on an upward climb
You’ve been so very good to us
So kind without a doubt
You’ve made us feel like winners
And make us want to shout
Today we’d like to thank you
For all you’ve done this year
And tell you that you’re legends
And oh so very dear
Today we’d like to tell you
In our own Sarah Redfern way
We appreciate all the things you’ve done
More than words can say

Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
On Wednesday, 10th June some of our school staff will be participating in a forum on the provision of support and resources for special needs/disabled children in Parliament House.
As a result of a survey of principals across NSW, conducted in March, a series of revealing issues emerged. We will be part of a group of professionals making an impassioned plea to government to uphold their legal/moral obligations to more adequately support these children.
I wish to recognise the courage and resolve of a number of our parents who have agreed to allow us to make a visual presentation at the forum. Wish us luck for a positive outcome.
New Position
The position vacated by Jodi Niedermayer has been advertised and applications close on Wednesday, 3rd June. We will be interviewing on Tuesday, 9th June with anticipated commencement as soon as possible. I will keep you informed.
Money Minder Training
Staff and parents will connect on Tuesday & Wednesday, 9th/10th June to examine and discuss aspects of Financial Literacy – a new course that nine of our classes are currently trialling. We look forward to sharing some new ideas and understanding of the current teaching of Mathematics. Julietta Guyatt and Garry Bland will represent the teaching staff. Many thanks to those parents who have agreed to participate.
Canteen Reminder
On Thursday, 4th June the canteen will be closed for the recess break while Busy Perritt and the girls attend a course on the provision of healthy canteen meals. The children can make their normal orders and receive them both in the lunch break, but hot food will not be provided for recess.
School Learning Support Officer (Preschool Aide)
Interviews were held last week for this position. The successful applicant will begin next term. We congratulate her for her successful application.
Old Person’s Leave
I will be taking leave for two weeks from 15th – 30th June. Clarice Maclou will relieve as principal during my absence.
Kind regards,
Cheryl McBride OAM

Advocacy Workshops for Families
Parents and other family members of a child, young person or adult who has a disability need to be an advocate as part of their caring role. This has been highlighted through discussions with families who have been ‘through the system’ and want a better deal for people who have a disability.
Presented by Families in Partnership Co-operative in conjunction with Linda Margrie Communications, the Advocacy Workshops are designed to give people:
• a basic understanding of the role of being an advocate,
• strategies and resources to become a successful advocate, and
• skills in communication and dealing with difficult situations.
Workshops will be held at the Campbelltown Catholic Club, Campbelltown. Each workshop runs from 10am to 3pm with registration at 9.30am. Morning tea will be available on arrival and a lunch break will be provided for you to enjoy the facilities available at the Catholic Club.
All Workshops are provided FREE to local families/carers of people who have a disability, through sponsorship by the Families in Partnership Co-operative. Please contact our office (4648 1594 or 0400 481 520) if child minding is required.

Farewell to Jodi Niedermayer

Jodi Niedermayer, teacher of K/6N, will leave us at the end of this week to take up a promotions position (Assistant Principal) at Leumeah P.S. We are extremely proud of Jodi’s achievement especially as Sarah Redfern P.S. has played such an important role in her development as a teacher and leader.
Many years ago Jodi completed a practicuum with us and was clearly a ‘standout’ as a competent and wonderfully committed teacher. We quickly identified her as an excellent addition to the staff and employed her as a temporary teacher.
Following some time at other schools an opportunity came along in the form of a vacancy at Sarah Redfern P.S. - Jodi was sought after and the rest is history.
Throughout her time here Jodi’स career has been punctuated with incredible love and care of
children, conscientiousness, challenge seeking and pursuit of personal excellence.
We will miss Jodi’s beautiful personality but wish her well.

Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
Many, many thanks to all parents who attended last week’s parent/teacher/ student interviews. Most teachers reported that they had shared information regarding the children’s achievements with every parent in their classes. This was a ‘best ever’ for Sarah Redfern P.S.
Building Education Resolution
Many parents may have heard or read about Prime Minister Rudd’s promise to refurbish Australian Primary Schools. Sarah Redfern P.S. will be the recipient of the following:
• $2.5 million to renovate 14 classrooms, the canteen, school hall, and steps/walkway near the senior foyer.
• $150,000 to completely re-landscape the Preschool play-ground.
What a wonderful difference this injection of funds will make to our children’s learning environment. We are impressed and excited!
Education Week
Our major public exhibition of educational achievement will be held in September when we present an Information Communication Techno-logy Expo. Officially Education Week will begin on Monday, 25th May. We will invite parents to join us in classrooms to spend some time sharing experiences and swapping stories about their time in primary school. Please keep an eye out for a note regarding times for your child’s class.
Ambassadors’ Program
Abanita Sarker, our SRC President, will represent our school on Monday, 25th May. She will participate in training during the day and attend a presentation evening at Revesby Workers’ Club.
We are extremely proud of the capable, confident young leader that Abanita has become. Congratulations to the Sarker family!
Teacher Training and Development
Teachers’ training over the next few weeks will concentrate on the following areas:
• Occupational Health & Safety training for committee members, Amanda Sinclair & Mathew Roberts;
• Additional training on the teaching of grammar – Sarah Rudling, Amy Smith & Chad Harris;
• Legal Issues / Family Law – all executive members;
• Financial Literacy – all teachers;
• Use of interactive whiteboards – all teachers.
Return of Opportunity Class (OC) Applications
A reminder to those parents who wish their Year 4 children to complete the tests for the Opportunity Classes located at St. Andrews, Bradbury and Leumeah Public Schools.
Please note that these tests are intended for the most gifted academic students not those in the average to above average range.
Have a good fortnight.
